Climate Change and
the Protection of
Cultural Heritage
Through a one-day programme attended by 25 teachers in Antalya’s Kaleiçi district, we brought together learning about heritage properties owned by foundations and raising awareness of the need to protect them from climate impacts.
Climate and cultural heritage in Kaleiçi
Passing cultural heritage on to future generations requires an understanding of its history and of the protection it needs as environmental conditions change.
As the Earth Foundation for Combating Climate Change, we delivered a one-day awareness programme for teachers in cooperation with the Antalya Regional Directorate of Foundations. The programme brought together 25 teachers from schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. It introduced heritage properties owned by foundations in Kaleiçi and addressed the importance of protecting them from the impacts of climate change. The information session with teachers took place inside Antalya Mevlevihanesi, the city’s Mevlevi Lodge. Our Foundation also supported the programme as a sponsor.
The central aim was to connect climate awareness with an understanding of cultural heritage conservation. Historic buildings preserve knowledge of a city’s past, ways of life and shared memory. To sustain these values, we believe that an interest in cultural heritage should grow into a sense of responsibility for its protection.
The venue for our gathering with teachers
Antalya
Mevlevi Lodge
Located within Kaleiçi’s historic setting, Antalya Mevlevi Lodge hosted the programme’s information session. Meeting with teachers inside this building allowed us to discuss the protection of cultural heritage within a historic site itself.

Learning on site and
conservation awareness
The relationship between cultural heritage, climate change and education shaped the programme’s content.
Getting to know cultural heritage
Introducing teachers to heritage properties owned by foundations in Kaleiçi enabled them to connect directly with the heritage of their city. Considering these sites in their own setting provided a tangible starting point for reflecting on why their protection matters.
Bringing climate impacts into conservation
Changes in temperature, rainfall and humidity are among the environmental factors that need to be considered when conserving historic buildings. The programme aimed to strengthen awareness by drawing attention to the importance of protecting cultural heritage from climate impacts.
Extending awareness through teachers
One of the programme’s aims was to help teachers bring their experience into educational settings. Teachers have an important role in encouraging students to take an interest in nearby historic sites and reflect on the future of this heritage.

Helping future generations
understand their city
and care for its heritage
Teachers play an important part in helping students understand their surroundings and develop a sense of responsibility towards them. For this reason, the programme focused on teachers working in schools affiliated with the Ministry of National Education.
We aimed for the connection established in Kaleiçi to inspire teachers to bring cultural heritage, environmental issues and climate change together in their lessons. Getting to know a historic site also offers an opportunity to consider what is needed to pass it on to future generations.
A programme supported
by institutional cooperation
Cooperation with the Antalya Regional Directorate of Foundations provided the basis for this gathering, linking an introduction to heritage properties owned by foundations with climate awareness.

Bringing conservation
awareness into daily life
We see this programme as a step towards developing a shared sense of responsibility for protecting cultural heritage. We hope that our connection with teachers will help students look more closely at their cities and historic surroundings. Our aim is for climate awareness to become part of how we think about the past and the future of the places we live in.
